Whether they’re running high-stakes races or herding cattle, working horses usually wear shoes—strictly utilitarian objects made of steel or aluminum meant to protect the animals’ hooves from rough surfaces.

Horseshoes have never been fashion statements. Until now.

In its latest stunt, the Kentucky-based tourism office VisitLEX has partnered with a local craftsman to turn rare, collector’s item human sneakers into premium “horseshoes” for the world’s greatest equine athletes.

“If LeBron James can have his own custom sneakers, why can’t American Pharaoh?” Mary Quinn Ramer, president of VisitLEX, said in a statement.

These fresh kicks come from Lexington shoe and cleat artist Marcus Floyd, whose company Infinite Kustomz specializes in customized and hand-painted products repurposed from major brands like Nike, New Balance and Adidas.
