Meta Seeks Oversight Board’s Counsel on Covid-19 Misinformation

The parent of Facebook, Instagram is considering demoting or labeling content rather than removing it altogether

Mere days after making a three-year, $150 million commitment to its Oversight Board, Meta threw its first tough assignment at the independent body tasked with making recommendations on matters related to content on Facebook and Instagram.

Then-Facebook began outright removing Covid-19 misinformation in the early stages of the pandemic in 2020, rather than flagging it, hiding it behind warning messages or limiting its distribution.

Meta president of global affairs Nick Clegg said in a Newsroom post Tuesday that the company is seeking the opinion of the Oversight Board on whether it should address misinformation related to Covid-19 in a different fashion, such as by labeling or demoting that content.
