How To Perform a Deep Website Audit

A properly functioning website allows customers to easily research your company, products, reviews, and services. Because users of your website will judge your company based on their overall experience with your website, it’s critical that you have a well functioning one. If there are typos, error pages, or navigation issues, it is important for us to identify issues immediately with a deep website audit. Below, you’ll learn more about the deep website audit process and best practices.

What is a Deep Website Audit?

A deep website audit is when you check every page, button, and link on your website to ensure each one is functioning properly and there are no errors. This is a great opportunity to view your website from a potential customer’s point of view.

Many changes are made to a client’s website throughout each month, including adding new pages, navigation links, inventory, and call-to-action buttons. That is why it’s important to perform deep site audits in order to test everything and make sure there are no issues with anything on the site.

How to Perform a Deep Website Audit

1. Start on the Homepage

There are many different links, buttons, and images on the homepage alone. The homepage should be eye-catching, inviting, and user-friendly. You should check address and phone number links, call-to-actions, social media icon links, and links to inventory.

Go to the footer and check all the menu links there as well.

2. Follow Navigation Menu

Start at the furthest left point and go to each link under that part of the menu. Make sure that every button on that page works and that everything is spelled correctly.

Keep following each link in the navigation and click on each link under that part of the menu. Continue checking links for any page that leads to an error. You should also click on any CTAs and buttons to ensure each leads to the correct page.

3. Document Issues Found

If you do identify any issues along the way, you must document what the issue is and where it is on the site so it can be resolved. For instance, if you click on a button that says “View Volvo XC90 For Sale” and it leads to a 404 error page, you will want to document that and fix it immediately. That is not something you want a user/potential customer to experience on your site because it can deter them from continuing to use your site and ultimately purchasing from your dealership.
