How Media Companies Celebrate Pride Amid LGBTQ+ Backlash

They have been thrust into the spotlight as hate legislation sweeps across the country

Don’t Say Gay. Bathroom bills. No trans kids in sports. Ban children from attending drag shows.

It may only be June, but so far in 2022, state lawmakers have filed nearly 300 anti-LGBTQ+ bills and other policy initiatives, nearly double last year’s total.

As the waves of hate legislation swept across the country, media companies have found themselves thrust into the spotlight, with Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill serving as a focal point.

The bill restricts discussion of sexual or gender identity in elementary schools, and when Disney refused to sign a public letter from the LGBTQ+ advocacy group Human Rights Campaign, which included support from companies like Amazon and Apple, groups across the country reacted with outrage.
