Digiday asked Matt Williams, CEO of The Martin Agency in Richmond, some good questions. Including this one:
What are your go-to interview questions?
What do you hate about this business? And what do you worry about if you were to get this job? That’s basically a way of asking people what’s important to them.
No one has ever asked me what I “hate about the business” in the context of a job interview. If someone were to ask, after the initial surprise, I’d likely say something about the unchecked egos or the incessant waste of time and money. Of course, I’d want to say it a pleasant way, so as not to scare the questioner off.
Another way to go would be to say, “Ain’t no time to hate.” Which might lead someone to conclude that I’m a pacifist. Hmmm…I don’t really see myself that way.
Now, what might cause me concern about working at The Martin Agency or another elite shop? Good question. I suppose I’d worry that I wasn’t talented enough, or charming enough, to meet everyone’s expectations of me.
How would you answer these all-seeing interview questions?
